What Is Flano Fabric? Flannel Bedding Explained

Flano is one of the most searched winter bedding terms in India. Here is what it means, how it is made, and how it compares with polar fleece.

If you sell bedding in North India, your customers will ask for flano: flano bedsheets, flano rajai covers, flano sets. Flano is simply the trade name used in India for flannel fabric, and it is one of the most popular choices for winter bedding.

What is flano (flannel) fabric?

Flannel is a soft woven or knitted fabric that is brushed after weaving. Brushing lifts tiny fibres from the surface, creating a fuzzy layer that traps air and holds body heat. That is why a flano bedsheet feels warm as soon as you touch it, unlike a cotton sheet, which feels cold on a winter night.

Flano vs polar fleece

  • Feel: flannel feels like soft, warm cloth. Polar fleece feels plush and spongy.
  • Weight: polar fleece is usually lighter for the same warmth.
  • Drying: polar fleece dries faster after washing.
  • Customer: some customers prefer the traditional cloth feel of flannel, others prefer the softness of fleece.

Caring for flano bedding

Wash in cold or lukewarm water on a gentle cycle, wash dark colours separately the first time and dry in shade. Avoid very hot dryers, which can flatten the brushed surface.
