What Is a Dohar? Dohar vs Blanket vs Comforter

The dohar is one of India’s best-selling bedding products. Here is what it is, how it compares with blankets and comforters, and what to stock.

Walk into any bedding shop in North India between October and March and you will see stacks of dohars. It is one of the most reliable sellers in the category, yet buyers who are new to bedding often ask what exactly a dohar is and how it differs from a blanket, a rajai or a comforter. This guide answers that question for retailers and wholesalers.

What is a dohar?

A dohar is a light, layered blanket. Traditionally it was made from two or three layers of soft cotton (often mulmul) stitched together. Today dohars are also made in polar fleece and flannel, which are warmer and easier to care for. A dohar is thinner than a rajai (quilt) and lighter than a heavy blanket, so it is used on mild winter nights, in the change of season, and in air-conditioned rooms all year round.

Dohar vs blanket vs rajai vs comforter

  • Dohar: light and layered. Used in mild cold and AC rooms. Easy to wash and fold.
  • Blanket: heavier, single thick layer (for example a mink blanket or wool blanket). Used on cold nights.
  • Rajai (quilt): filled with cotton or polyester wadding. The warmest option for peak winter, usually used with a rajai cover.
  • Comforter: a filled, stitched cover similar to a rajai, usually with polyester fibre filling, often sold as part of a bedding set.

Why polar fleece dohars sell well

Polar fleece dohars feel soft and warm, are light enough to carry and fold, wash easily in a machine and dry quickly. For a retailer they are also easy to display and offer a wide choice of colours and prints. That combination makes the polar fleece dohar cover set a steady seller in every price segment.

Sizes to stock

Most shops stock two sizes: single bed and double bed. Double bed dohars sell more in family households, while single dohars sell well to hostels, students and for children’s rooms. If you sell online, list the exact size in inches and centimetres, because buyers compare sizes carefully.

What to check when you buy dohars wholesale

  • Fabric feel and GSM: heavier fabric feels warmer but costs more. Ask for samples in two weights.
  • Stitching: edges should be evenly stitched with no loose threads.
  • Colour fastness: wash a sample once before you place a bulk order.
  • Packing: a clean poly bag with a clear label helps the dohar sell on the shelf.

Ordering for the season

Dohars move early in the season, so most retailers order between July and September. See our winter bedding ordering calendar for a month-by-month plan.

Bazentica Private Limited manufactures polar fleece dohar cover sets in Kandhla, District Shamli, and supplies them wholesale across India, including under your own brand. See our dohar range or ask for a wholesale price.
