Percale vs Sateen vs Satin-Stripe: Hotel Bedsheets Explained

Hotel buyers usually specify three things for a bedsheet: the fibre (100% cotton or poly-cotton), the thread count and the weave. The weave is often the least understood, yet it changes the feel of the sheet, how it looks on the bed and how well it survives commercial laundry.

Percale

Percale is a plain weave: one thread over, one thread under. It gives a crisp, matte, cool feel that many guests associate with a classic hotel bed. Percale is strong and holds up well to frequent washing, which makes it a common choice for hotels and hospitals with high laundry cycles.

Sateen

Sateen uses a weave where more threads float on the surface (for example four over, one under). The result is smoother, softer and has a gentle sheen. Sateen feels luxurious, but the longer floats can be less resistant to abrasion than percale, so laundry care matters.

Satin-stripe

Satin-stripe sheets alternate bands of sateen weave with plain weave, creating a tone-on-tone stripe in white. They are popular in hotels because the stripe looks premium on the bed and helps housekeeping align the sheet straight.

Cotton or poly-cotton?

• 100% cotton: soft, breathable and comfortable. Preferred by many premium hotels.
• Poly-cotton: stronger, creases less, dries faster and usually costs less. Preferred by hospitals, budget hotels and high-volume laundries.

Thread count

Which should you choose?

• High-volume hotels and hospitals: percale, often poly-cotton.
• Business and premium hotels: percale or satin-stripe in cotton.
• Luxury rooms and suites: sateen or satin-stripe in cotton.
