Bedsheet and Mattress Sizes in India: A Simple Size Chart
Size is the most common reason for bedding returns. This chart lists the common mattress sizes in India and how to size fitted and flat sheets.
Size questions cause more bedding returns than any other issue. Indian mattress sizes vary between brands, and buyers often confuse mattress size with bedsheet size. This guide gives a simple reference for retailers and wholesale buyers.
Common mattress sizes in India
Mattress length in India is usually 72, 75 or 78 inches. Common widths are:
- Single: about 36 inches wide
- Double: about 48 inches wide
- Queen: about 60 inches wide
- King: about 72 inches wide
Mattress depth (thickness) is commonly between 4 and 8 inches. Always confirm with the mattress your customers use most.
Fitted bedsheet sizes
A fitted bedsheet is made to the mattress length and width, plus a pocket for the mattress depth. Elastic all around the edge holds it in place. When you order fitted sheets, give your supplier three numbers: length, width and depth. For example, a queen fitted sheet for a 78 x 60 inch mattress with 6 inch depth.
Flat bedsheet sizes
A flat sheet must be larger than the mattress so it can be tucked under. A common rule is to add roughly twice the mattress depth plus a tuck allowance to both length and width. That is why a double bed flat sheet is usually much larger than the mattress itself.
Duvet cover and quilt cover sizes
Duvet covers and quilt (rajai) covers are sized to the duvet or rajai, not the mattress. Measure the filled duvet or rajai and order a cover a little larger so it is easy to fit.
Tips for retailers
- Print the size in both inches and centimetres on the label.
- For online listings, show the size chart in the images.
- Stock fewer king sizes unless your market has many king beds.
