Hotel Linen Par Levels: How Much Linen Does a Hotel Need?

Par level is the simplest way to plan how much linen a hotel should buy. Here is how to calculate it for sheets, towels and pillow covers.

Ordering too little linen means rooms wait for laundry. Ordering too much ties up money and storage space. Hotels solve this with a simple planning tool called the par level.

What is a par level?

One par is the quantity of linen needed to make up every room in the hotel once. If a room needs two bedsheets, one par for a 50-room hotel is 100 bedsheets.

How many pars does a hotel need?

A common starting point is three par:

  • One set in the rooms
  • One set in the laundry
  • One set clean in the store

Many hotels keep extra par to cover laundry delays, damage and losses, especially if laundry is outsourced or far away.

A simple example

For a 50-room hotel where each room uses 2 bedsheets, 1 duvet cover, 4 pillow covers, 2 bath towels, 2 hand towels and 1 bath mat, multiply each item by 50 rooms and then by the number of pars you choose.

Plan for replacement

Linen wears out with washing. Track rejected items each month and order replacements before stock falls below your par. Ordering the same specification every time keeps rooms consistent.

Specification matters

Write a linen specification for each item: fibre, thread count, weave, size, colour, GSM for towels and any logo or dobby border. Share it with every supplier so quotes are comparable. See Percale vs sateen and Choosing hotel towels.
